Menstruation is a natural and normal process that many women experience, but there are still some misconceptions about it. While it's true that menstruation can sometimes be uncomfortable, it's also an amazing biological process. Infact I liken it to having super powers (I mean you get to birth a human, like how cool is that!). Now instead of viewing menstruation as something odd , let's celebrate the power and strength of women's bodies. Let's take a look at some common myths about menstruation and debunk them. Are you ready? Let's go!!!

  1.  "Menstruation is unclean" This is the most common one I have heard. I also discovered that a lot of men find women who have their periods irritating and dirty. This should not be. I would like you to know that menstrual blood is simply a mixture of endometrial tissue and blood, which is expelled from the body during a period. It's not a sign of illness or uncleanliness, and it doesn't make a woman impure or "dirty". In fact, it's a sign of a healthy and functioning reproductive system.
  2. "All women experience menstrual cramps" Another common misconception is that periods are painful for everyone. While it's true that many people experience pain and discomfort during their periods, not everyone does. Some people may have very mild cramps or no pain at all. Everyone's experience is different and that there's no "right" way to feel during a period.
  3. "Every woman gets her period" I bet this one had you on a gasp-hold! In as much as a woman's body has already been programmed for menstruation, not all women experience this. For example, women who are pregnant, have reached menopause, or have certain medical conditions may not have a period. And some women have irregular periods, which means they don't get them on a regular schedule.
  4. "You can't get pregnant if you are on your period" I really wish it were that simple! The menstrual cycle is made up of four phases with the ovulation phase determining when eggs are going to be released for fertilization. The average menstrual cycle takes place within 28 days but due to some factors it could take a lady more or lesser days to complete a cycle. This means that ovulation can occur at different times during a woman's cycle and with what implication? Yes, even if a woman is menstruating, she could still be ovulating and thus, she could still get pregnant!
  5. "I'm acting out because I am on my period" If I got a naira for every time I heard a lady use this excuse, I would be counting my first million now! The myth that people are irrational or emotional during their periods is a harmful and untrue stereotype. In fact, studies have shown that there is no evidence to support the idea that menstruation has any effect on a person's behavior. While some people may experience mood changes or other symptoms during their period, this is not due to the hormones associated with menstruation. Rather, these changes are likely due to other factors, such as stress or a lack of sleep.

For far too long, menstruation has been clouded by misinformation and misconceptions. It's important to talk about menstruation, to clear up these misunderstandings and to help every woman feel comfortable with her body. Hopefully this article has helped to debunk some of the most common myths about menstruation. Have you ever heard these myths before? What other myths have you heard about menstruation?
