For years, skincare routines have been labeled as feminine. I find this funny because the skin is quite a delicate organ and needs appropriate care. In other words, the secret to a healthy skin is essential for everyone, regardless of their gender. Once, I asked a guy for his skincare routine and he retorted: “I be woman?” This crass comment left me wondering if his skin was made of wood because even wooden surfaces need maintenance from time to time talk more of the skin.

Men's skin, though often thicker, faces unique challenges like daily shaving and sun exposure. So, the question isn't "Do men need skincare?" but rather "What kind of skincare do men need?" This multipart series will explore the benefits of a basic skincare routine for men.

Part 1 dives into the reasons why men should become involved in skincare. There are several reasons but I will be dropping the basic concerns.

Daily Damage: Yes! The infamous beards. Having them signifies maturity in the male folks. Infact studies have shown that most men in their youthful age look forward to taming beards. While it is something they all crave to have, there’s something they do not tell us! Beards can be uncomfortable and difficult to maintain! If you would like to know a man who’s not hygienic, take a look at his beards and see for yourself. A lot of men harbor dirt and bacteria in their beards. I mean why not? Lack of proper grooming makes your beards a potential breeding site! Then let us also look at the men who make an effort to groom and maintain their beards. While these group of men should be applauded, they most often get it wrong. It could be that they do not know the proper way of shaving or that they are not using the right shaving products for their skin, and as a result, they suffer from irritation, post-shave redness, and ingrown hairs which often result in bumps which can be extremely painful.

Signs of Aging: Men are hard workers too and could go under the sun for several hours all in the name of “hustling”. While they are taking care of their pockets, they totally forgot about their skin. Going under the sun for long time intervals exposes your skin to sun damage and environmental stressors. Sun damage and environmental stressors contribute to wrinkles and loss of elasticity. These in turn tamper with your skin’s texture and radiance and could even become much worse if caution is not taken. A good skincare routine can slow these signs and even completely avoid them.

Boost Confidence: Healthy, clear skin promotes a more confident appearance. Having bad skin can tamper with such confidence regardless of your gender. I would like to point out that most men see skincare as unnecessary and a total waste of time and money Skincare isn't vanity, it's about self-care. Having the right mindset would go a long way in influencing these folks and changing their attitude towards skincare.

Would you like to debunk the myths of “skincare is not meant for men” or “skincare is a lady’s thing” and take your skin to the next level?

Stay tuned for Part 2, where we explore simple skincare routines for men to achieve a healthy, balanced complexion!
