Cleansing is the basic foundation of a skincare routine. As I usually like to tell people, I see it as a ritual that must be done with utmost care and diligence.

Imagine trying to install a house without laying a solid foundation, would quickly result in a disaster right? Or how about skipping primary school and just heading straight to secondary school, does that feel right?

Just as laying a solid foundation for your house and initially attending primary school are important, so also is cleansing your skin. To make my point clear, they all have something in common: they set the path for other steps or processes to occur!

Cleansing prepares your skin for other skincare regimens to be effectively carried out. Now you might claim you always cleanse your skin but the real question is: are you doing it the right way?

The way you currently cleanse your skin could be below the required beauty standards and this is a crime punishable by the beauty court (pun intended).

Now, here are the step-by-step rules to follow when cleansing your skin.

Rule 1: use a suitable cleanser for your skin type. It could be a bar cleanser, a gel based or creamy cleanser. As long as it’s well suited for your skin type, you are good to go.

Rule 2: cleanse your face both morning and evening. The evening cleanse is to help remove makeup, sunscreen and environmental pollutants we must have come in contact with during the day. Doing this helps you prevent breakouts, blemishes and premature ageing.

Rule 3: do not use facial wipes on your face. Facial wipes are often irritating to the skin and only smear the dirt, makeup and oil across your skin leaving your face not thoroughly cleansed.

Rule 4: when cleansing your face, use lukewarm water. This is an effective way of removing dirt and other debris. Using cold water won’t get your skin properly cleansed and using hot water strips your skin of it’s natural oils and causes an irritation.

Rule 5: do not apply a facial cleanser directly to your skin. Always wet your skin first before application.

Rule 6: use a separate towel for your face. Avoid rubbing your face vigorously to dry off water. Gently pat dry instead.

Carry out these steps on your next cleanse to avoid doing jail time for defying beauty (another pun intended). Would you like a free recommendation on a suitable cleanser for your skin type? Leave a comment in the comment section below.
